Over the past couple of weeks we have lived through the deaths of several quite notable people. It’s amazing how people you don’t know personally can have such an effect on you.
I kept telling my husband that I was getting a bit annoyed with myself as I felt the grief come over me with each day that the news bombarded us with information about Michael Jackson’s life. There were uplifting things mentioned and of course, some very dark things talked about as well.
It’s amazing to me how so much information can come out when a person has passed on; information that remains concealed when they were alive. Where were all of the people that are currently sharing the wonderful information about how great of a parent and a person he was when he was in the midst of a trial? Anyway, as you can see I have my feelings about all of that…very strong ones.
As I thought about Michael Jackson, Farrah Fawcet and yes even Billy Mays, I was struck how these people have affected our lives. We don’t know them, yet we feel intimate with them and they have managed to have an effect of one way or another on each of us. As I thought of their death, I thought of the deaths of others that I have known personally. I recognize clearly that even though life continues without them, their affect on me continues to live…and thus so do they.
Have you thought about your own legacy lately? Do you realize that whether you think about it or not you will have one? I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about mine. I have found that there are several areas of my life where I am dissatisfied. It’s not about anyone else only me. I feel that I haven’t done enough that really matters. I realize that all of this speculation do to the passing of some folks with celebrity status comes at a time when I believe that God is thrusting me into another dimension of the level I’m in.
So, while I’m feeling a bit incomplete, this is due to me moving in a direction that will further determine the legacy I will leave behind. What about you? What is your legacy? What impact will your life have on your children, your siblings, your nieces and nephews? What about those others that are all around and involved with you somehow…how does your life speak to them?
As a Christian, I am grateful for the legacy of the people in the bible. The pieces of their life as expressed in the bible encourage and enlighten me. I often think of the setting they were in and how they were willing to be bold in the face of opposition. I think of the impact of their followers – causing the history of events of that time to be carefully preserved so that generations to come would be able to read them and know their truth. It takes a powerful conviction in order to get someone to risk all that these people have risked and surrendered. When was the last time you felt this passionate about something? Or maybe I should ask: When was the last time you allowed yourself to be this passionate about something? We all have a purpose, maybe many purposes.
But we do not all embrace our purpose. We do not all want responsibility. Shouldn’t your life matter? Shouldn’t your life have a positive impact on even one person? Here is my truth for you today: What you do may not touch the entire world…but I guarantee that we will all be affected by it just the same. Life is shorter than we know. The time to get serious about it is now. The time to have a great future is now. The time to be financially sound is now. The time to make things right with those around you is now. The time to make things right with God is now. The time is now to let go of all of those things that hold you back. Move forward with a positive attitude and break the cycle of fear that crip ples a positive legacy. Remember, a legacy isn’t created, it is lived.
